Finding fleas on your dog is stressful, but it is also very common in Florida — and it is fixable.
First, do not panic, and do not try to shave your dog. Shaving does not get rid of fleas, and it can leave the skin more exposed. What helps is a proper bath, the right treatment, and a plan to stop them from coming back.
If we find fleas during your appointment, our policy requires a flea shampoo treatment to help address fleas on your dog and reduce the risk of spreading them in the van. We will explain what we found and let you know the treatment cost before proceeding. This bath does not replace ongoing flea prevention or treatment recommended by your veterinarian.
But a bath alone is not the whole answer. Fleas live in bedding, carpets, and yards too, not just on your dog. Wash bedding in hot water, vacuum often, and talk to your veterinarian about a regular flea and tick prevention plan. Grooming helps with what is on your dog today. Prevention is what keeps them from coming back tomorrow.
Watch for signs that need a vet visit, not just a bath: constant scratching, red or irritated skin, hair loss, sores, or flea dirt that looks like tiny black specks in the coat. If your dog is very uncomfortable, or if you see swelling or open sores, call your veterinarian first.
Between visits, a few minutes of brushing helps a lot. Brushing lets you spot fleas, flea dirt, or skin changes early, before they become a bigger problem.
At The Doggy Machine, we will always tell you honestly what we find during grooming, what treatment your dog needs that day, and what to do next at home. No surprises, just clear care for your pup.
