Your dog is not being difficult. If grooming feels scary, rushed, or painful, most dogs will try to avoid it next time — and who can blame them?
A bad first experience can stay with a dog for a long time. Loud dryers, slippery tables, strange smells, other barking dogs, and being handled by someone new can be a lot, especially for puppies, rescues, and dogs who have never been groomed before.
So how do we make it easier?
First, we go slow. At The Doggy Machine, grooming happens one dog at a time, inside our van, right outside your home. There is no noisy salon, no waiting in a cage next to other dogs.
Second, we pay attention to what your dog is telling us. If a dog needs a break, we take a break. If a certain area is sensitive, we work around it gently. If a dog is nervous about the dryer or the clippers, we introduce them little by little, with calm words and patience.
Third, you can help at home. Short, positive handling sessions make a big difference. Touch their paws, ears, and belly for a few seconds, then praise and treat. Keep it short and happy, and stop before your dog gets stressed. That is how grooming starts to feel normal, not scary.
Some dogs need extra time and special handling, and that is okay. We adapt the visit to your dog's comfort and tolerance, with safety guiding every decision. If continuing becomes too stressful or unsafe, we may need to adjust or stop the service and discuss the next steps with you.
If your dog has had a bad experience before, tell us when you book. Knowing what happened helps us plan a calmer visit from the start.
At The Doggy Machine, we believe a good groom is not just about how your dog looks when we finish. It is about how your dog feels during the whole visit — safe, respected, and cared for.
